How the GMAT Impacts MBA Admissions
While the admissions process differs amongst schools and even changes from year to year, your GMAT score matters in these ways:
- how your overall score compares to the schools average score
- how your separate scores compare to the schools average score
U.S. News has made an industry of ranking business schools and has unfortunately influenced how schools manage their admissions process. Here is how:
- GMAT scores are a key factor in developing the rankings
- Schools want to look good in the rankings
- Students with high GMAT scores make a school look good
- Some schools attempt to raise or maintain their average GMAT
A good GMAT score especially matters if you have a below-average GPA, or a relatively lightweight undergraduate degree in, say, basket weaving or playground management. (Note: my undergraduate degree is in engineering from a top football school that
had so-called degrees like these.)
